This flexibility in being able to change from a sofa to a bed in no time is especially slick for those who do not want to invest in an extra bed for occasional guests or for those who simply do not have room for extra furniture. You can get anything from conventional futon couches and beds to unique futon sleeper chairs and futon bunk beds. The frame that a futon is structured around is always an important aspect. Choosing a good frame will ensure that the futon will last longer and be more comfortable. While most futon frames are of good quality, making sure the frame is sturdy should always be a priority. They also come in various types like polished wooden frames or gleaming steel.

In a land were space is often at a premium and a chair may consist of a pillow on the floor, they are a logical choice for bedding. Retailers I've spoken to have said that the black metal futon frame is the number one service headache when it came to futons with over 95% of service issues being the failure of a black metal frame component. Replacing these parts were made more difficult by the fact the manufacturers were located overseas and obtaining the parts past the 90 day warranty period often involved the retailer having to purchase the replacement parts and charging the customer.

What are the pro's and con's to natural fibers vs. foams? How long should my futon mattress last? Feel is a rather subjective term; someone's firm could be too soft for another. As a general rule of thumb, my customers like a firm futon for sleeping, a soft futon for sitting, and in between mattress for a sofa that converts into a guest bed. Foam futons usually retain the firmness they have when purchased, but only if the foam is of an acceptable quality. Look for foam that has a density no less than 1.2 pound per cubic foot. With foam, higher density usually equals a long lasting mattress that retains it feel. Natural fibers, mostly cotton, are good for futons that need more flexibility. For those of us that are traditionalist's a natural fiber and foam blend is a good choice when looking at a futon mattress.

They are now being used as actual furniture due to the beautiful designs of the frames, as well as the advancements in futon mattresses. Some of them rival the feel of the finest sofa or bed mattresses available and are made with very high quality combinations of ingredients, including several types of Memory Foam, Latex, Springs, Wool, Soy Foams, Cotton, Organic Cotton, Polyester, Spring Cores, Silk, Cashmere, and more. There are also Natural, Green, and Organic Futons for those with chemical sensitivities or that just want to get away from all of the harmful chemicals that are put into bedding these days. Futons are no longer just a temporary bed or couch for college students or kids.

They are simply cheaper on average than regular sofas and beds. Since one futon can replace two pieces of furniture (a sofa and a bed), these cost savings are further amplified.
