They are now being used as actual furniture due to the beautiful designs of the frames, as well as the advancements in futon mattresses. Some of them rival the feel of the finest sofa or bed mattresses available and are made with very high quality combinations of ingredients, including several types of Memory Foam, Latex, Springs, Wool, Soy Foams, Cotton, Organic Cotton, Polyester, Spring Cores, Silk, Cashmere, and more. There are also Natural, Green, and Organic Futons for those with chemical sensitivities or that just want to get away from all of the harmful chemicals that are put into bedding these days. Futons are no longer just a temporary bed or couch for college students or kids.

When I first got into the Futon business about six years ago, I was under the impression, as a lot of folks are, that futons weren't nice enough for anywhere other than college dorms and first apartments. Well, things have certainly changed. This is not to say that those unfinished tri-fold frames with thin all cotton futon mattresses don't exist anymore, they do, but there are also some very nice frames, mattresses, and futon covers in today's market.

How long will my frame last? Always look for a futon frame that is made from solid hardwoods, avoid any frames that are made from particle board or MDF. Measure width and the distance between the slats on the back and seat decks. Slats should be at least two and a half inches wide and if the spacing is more than three inches, forget it. Even with the best mattress on the market you'll feel slats that are too thin, or to far apart. If you use a futon frame with substandard, unsupported slats you run the risk of ruining your mattress. Try to look for frames that feature mortise and tennon joinery and metal on metal connections, they'll only add to the life of your frame.

While this makes them more like the kind of furniture non-Japanese expect, they still have unique features and simplicity that make them a great, cost-effective choice.

Used as a couch during the day and a bed at night, the dorm room can look like a living room or a bedroom depending on what a student wants to have at any one time.

Futons do make a sensible investment as they provide all of the features and benefits of a sofa sleeper but at a fraction of the cost in many cases. If you find the right frame that is well built from quality materials and a good mattress your futon experience is sure to be a positive one. Avoid metal futon frames that are made more to hit a particular price point then they are to be a piece of furniture that can offer longevity as a dependable sofa and sleeper for your home. The right futon can provide you and your family with years of quality use. The wrong futon frame will simply become disposable furniture.

With futons, everything can be removed quickly and easily. The futon cover can simply be thrown in the wash or replaced. In more serious situations, the mattress can also be replaced without major expense.

Retailers I've spoken to have said that the black metal futon frame is the number one service headache when it came to futons with over 95% of service issues being the failure of a black metal frame component. Replacing these parts were made more difficult by the fact the manufacturers were located overseas and obtaining the parts past the 90 day warranty period often involved the retailer having to purchase the replacement parts and charging the customer.

Tri-fold means that three sections make up the frame of the futon and as such the futon operates using these three sections to create the sleep surface and seating. Early models required locking pins but more modern designs were developed that did away with this by incorporating an improved design that folded up under itself. The only thing not going for these frames is that they would sit very low to the ground making them a great choice only for those who get in and out of them easily. Today you'll find these frames offered in more specialty futon stores as they are typically made from pine and are left unfinished. Tri-fold futons are still sold today and usually offered at much lower price points.
