What are the pro's and con's to natural fibers vs. foams? How long should my futon mattress last? Feel is a rather subjective term; someone's firm could be too soft for another. As a general rule of thumb, my customers like a firm futon for sleeping, a soft futon for sitting, and in between mattress for a sofa that converts into a guest bed. Foam futons usually retain the firmness they have when purchased, but only if the foam is of an acceptable quality. Look for foam that has a density no less than 1.2 pound per cubic foot. With foam, higher density usually equals a long lasting mattress that retains it feel. Natural fibers, mostly cotton, are good for futons that need more flexibility. For those of us that are traditionalist's a natural fiber and foam blend is a good choice when looking at a futon mattress.

Click-clack bed looks like a traditional sofa, love seat, or chair. It has a metal frame covered with cloth, suede, or leather and transforms into a bed using a series of hinges. Some click-clack beds have traditional arms that are removed, while others are designed so the head and foot of the bed bend up to create armrests when it is in a couch form.

While this obviously comes in handy when moving a futon to another room, it is also nice when moving it longer distances. Moving regular furniture is very awkward and requires a lot of hands as well as shipping space. The ease in which futons can be broken down means they require a lot less shipping space and fewer hands to move them. This can save on both shipping expense and needless aggravation!

While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon.
