While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon.

If you're shopping for a futon, here are some things to think about if you see a black metal futon frame in a mass merchant or big box store. Consider the fact that most solid wood futon frames carry a warranty anywhere from a year to a lifetime warranty. Black metal futon frames have a 90 day warranty. It says something about how much the manufacturer stands behind the product. Black metal frames are made overseas. Expect to wait for a part if something breaks or if you're past that 90 day warranty, expect to pay for all replacement parts and associated costs to get your frame up and running again. Consider too that parts may also no longer be available should something break. Metal bars allow mattresses to slide into and through the gaps between each bar. This puts lumps in your mattress and can make the futon quite uncomfortable when compared to flat wooden slats on wood frames.

This flexibility in being able to change from a sofa to a bed in no time is especially slick for those who do not want to invest in an extra bed for occasional guests or for those who simply do not have room for extra furniture. They come in up to queen sizes and work just fine for daily use as a bed too.

The majority of frames, mattresses and covers that I sell are made in the USA. A claim that those mega marts won't even try to make. I strive to sell as much product that's made in the USA as possible. I live here, and want to promote American made products.

A lounge futon can seat one or two people and has no armrests. The only piece that bends is the one that supports a person's back or shoulders and is arranged so the person is sitting up or lying down.

During the day, futons transform into comfortable couches and sofas and at night they can be folded out to transform into equally comfortable beds. If you buy a futon, you can proudly become connected with ancient samurai history and look out for your comfort at the same time!

This creates additional space for a dorm room or a child's room. As a couch, students can use the futon to entertain or watch TV. Then they can open it for guests to sleep on.

Serving many functions, futons may not offer the level of comfort or look some people desire. First time buyers should carefully consider what is most important for them before making any purchases.

What are the pro's and con's to natural fibers vs. foams? How long should my futon mattress last? Feel is a rather subjective term; someone's firm could be too soft for another. As a general rule of thumb, my customers like a firm futon for sleeping, a soft futon for sitting, and in between mattress for a sofa that converts into a guest bed. Foam futons usually retain the firmness they have when purchased, but only if the foam is of an acceptable quality. Look for foam that has a density no less than 1.2 pound per cubic foot. With foam, higher density usually equals a long lasting mattress that retains it feel. Natural fibers, mostly cotton, are good for futons that need more flexibility. For those of us that are traditionalist's a natural fiber and foam blend is a good choice when looking at a futon mattress.

Retailers I've spoken to have said that the black metal futon frame is the number one service headache when it came to futons with over 95% of service issues being the failure of a black metal frame component. Replacing these parts were made more difficult by the fact the manufacturers were located overseas and obtaining the parts past the 90 day warranty period often involved the retailer having to purchase the replacement parts and charging the customer.
