Synthetic fibers have come a long way, they are constantly being improved and they hold vivid dyes that cotton and linen can't. A good compromise between Natural and Synthetic fibers is blends of the two, which are in abundance in the futon cover market.

This flexibility in being able to change from a sofa to a bed in no time is especially slick for those who do not want to invest in an extra bed for occasional guests or for those who simply do not have room for extra furniture. They come in up to queen sizes and work just fine for daily use as a bed too.

Then, an end table can be placed in the corner, and a three seat futon can be placed at the long end of the room. While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon.

Tri-fold means that three sections make up the frame of the futon and as such the futon operates using these three sections to create the sleep surface and seating. Early models required locking pins but more modern designs were developed that did away with this by incorporating an improved design that folded up under itself. The only thing not going for these frames is that they would sit very low to the ground making them a great choice only for those who get in and out of them easily. Today you'll find these frames offered in more specialty futon stores as they are typically made from pine and are left unfinished. Tri-fold futons are still sold today and usually offered at much lower price points.

Finally, a futon that could be offered at a much a lower price point. Black metal frames were being imported from China, Malaysia and Taiwan. Many of the early black metal frames were packaged with an import mattress made up of ground up textile materials and a colored covering with tufts. These packages were often anywhere in price from $199 - $249 and started out in specialty futon shops as a great way to introduce customers on a budget into a lower priced futon option. It was soon discovered though that these frames were not such a bargain that they appeared to be.
