This flexibility in being able to change from a sofa to a bed in no time is especially slick for those who do not want to invest in an extra bed for occasional guests or for those who simply do not have room for extra furniture. They come in up to queen sizes and work just fine for daily use as a bed too.

Futons were traditionally Japanese mattresses which could be folded up and stored away during the daytime to save space. At night, these mattresses were then taken out and used as beds. Nowadays, thanks to their new features, futons have gained in popularity all over the world and have become synonymous with great convenience as well as superb comfort.

While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon.

The makes any type of home repairs extremely irritating at best. Futons are very open though and everything is easily accessible. How long will my frame last? Always look for a futon frame that is made from solid hardwoods, avoid any frames that are made from particle board or MDF. Measure width and the distance between the slats on the back and seat decks. Slats should be at least two and a half inches wide and if the spacing is more than three inches, forget it. Even with the best mattress on the market you'll feel slats that are too thin, or to far apart. If you use a futon frame with substandard, unsupported slats you run the risk of ruining your mattress. Try to look for frames that feature mortise and tennon joinery and metal on metal connections, they'll only add to the life of your frame.

In a land were space is often at a premium and a chair may consist of a pillow on the floor, they are a logical choice for bedding. They simply are taken out at night and folded up to be stored away in a closet during the day.

Tri-fold means that three sections make up the frame of the futon and as such the futon operates using these three sections to create the sleep surface and seating. Early models required locking pins but more modern designs were developed that did away with this by incorporating an improved design that folded up under itself. The only thing not going for these frames is that they would sit very low to the ground making them a great choice only for those who get in and out of them easily. Today you'll find these frames offered in more specialty futon stores as they are typically made from pine and are left unfinished. Tri-fold futons are still sold today and usually offered at much lower price points.

When I first got into the Futon business about six years ago, I was under the impression, as a lot of folks are, that futons weren't nice enough for anywhere other than college dorms and first apartments. Well, things have certainly changed. This is not to say that those unfinished tri-fold frames with thin all cotton futon mattresses don't exist anymore, they do, but there are also some very nice frames, mattresses, and futon covers in today's market.
